Kolkata Knight Riders emerged victorious in the battle of cellar teams against Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League in Mohali, on Saturday.
And it was Manoj Tiwary who proved to be the difference between the two. He not only starred with the bat, hitting a cracking half-century, but also took a brilliant diving catch to send back Yuvraj Singh just when the left-hander was threatening to take charge.
Tiwary played a swashbuckling knock of 75 from 47 balls, laced with eight boundaries and two sixes, to lift Kolkata to 183 for five in their 20 overs.
Just when it looked Kolkata were heading for a mediocre total, Tiwary changed the script, hitting Irfan Pathan for two sixes and two boundaries in the final over of the innings for 21 runs in that over.
It lifted Kolkata and gave them the much-needed momentum, going into the second half of the match.
Shane Bond struck in the first over with the wicket of in-form Ravi Bopara (0) but Kolkata were never safe till his opening Yuvraj was at the crease.
The left-hander threatened to take charge when he hit Ajit Agarkar for a boundary and six off successive deliveries. But he fell of the very next delivery when he tried another pull shot but this time he didn’t get it off the middle, lobbing a catch towards midwicket.
Any other ordinary fielder would have given up but Tiwary showed great commitment as he ran full steam from deep square leg towards midwicket and just about managed to take the catch by diving to his right.
Punjab never threatened with the bat after that and kept losing wickets, and eventually finished on a paltry 144 for six in their 20 overs as they lost by 39 runs.
