Australia houses diversified cultures and tribes, which live in perfect consonance. Besides, the contemporary European culture and lifestyle that veneers the country, you would also easily find traces of Aboriginal history and cultural presence, down the interiors.
boriginal antecedents
It is hard to find any written evidence on the culture and traditions of prehistoric Aboriginal Australia. Whatever knowledge that exists has been stored in the concrete form of annals at the archaeology departments or what has descended from generations to generations, through the ancient folklore traditions.
Aboriginal inhabitants:
To look for Australian aboriginal cultures and practices is not a cumbersome task. Major areas to look for aborigines are North East Arnhem Land, Melbourne, Campbell town, Sydney and Parramatta districts. While some of the Aboriginal people conformed to the Whitman’s laws and the contemporary lifestyle, many have still retained their original culture and traditions, thus eschewing European technology for over 200 years.
Aboriginal Tribes:
Aranda, Arrarnta, yolgnu and Arunta are the major aboriginal tribes that inhabit central Australia. Besides, there are five dialects of the Arrernte language namely South-eastern, Central, Northern, Eastern and North-eastern that are used for conversation.
Tribal Rituals and ceremonies:
Aboriginals follow a very simple and nomadic way of life, with traditional dancing and ceremonies forming an integral part of various tribal communities. This helps to maintain and carry on their culture to the future generation. However, there are many tribal performances which are not for a commoner to see. Further, in many tribes you would witness the use of didgeridoo or ‘drone pipe’, which produces bass and rhythm for ceremonial gatherings and night dances known as cooroborees. The Aborigines also follow a strict moral code among their families.
Traditional Fish catching:
Catching fish, in a traditional way, requires endurance and adventure, which is showcased in the aboriginal lifestyles. The use of spear, besides other instruments, marks a splendid division of labor.
Hunting
Aboriginals are very adept hunters. Boomerang is primarily used as the hunting tool and a war weapon among the Aborigines. However, some of them also use the more dreaded Kylies, or killer sticks hat pierce the body of victims to death.
Food rearing and gathering
Tribal women are primarily entrenched in the occupation of gathering vegetables, roots, herbs, fruits and nuts, eggs and honey, and small land animals such as Snakes and Goannas. Women are also engaged in wide range of bush food. However, the main occupation of the aboriginal men is hunting, and they target large land animals and birds such as Emus and Kangaroos.
