AMC and Lionsgate have announced a multiple season deal for MAD MEN with Matthew Weiner signing on as showrunner in a long-term agreement. With the series creator back on board for seasons five and six, Lionsgate also has opened the possibility of extending Mad Men into a seventh season by concurrently signing another new long-term deal with Weiner.

Mad Men creator Matt Weiner has closed a deal to produce the fifth season of AMC’s flagship show according to Deadline Hollywood.

You may have been under the impression that the deal was done already, with the fifth season coming in January 2012, but that was a bit of brinkmanship on AMC’s part and a message to Weiner that the show would go on with or without him.

Part of the sticking point was that AMC wanted to trim the show’s episodes down by two minutes, from 47 minutes to 45. Acording to Deadline, the show will be shot in two versions, one at 45 minutes for AMC and one at 47 minutes for video on demand and DVDs.
