It’s Day 1 at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2011 and two celeb showstoppers, actress Geeta Basra (aka Harbhajan Singh’s girlfriend) and actress Riya Sen, were spotted on the ramp. The question is did they sizzle in designer wear or fizzle out?

Geeta Basra was the showstopper for designer duo Parvesh and Jai. We suspect the designers dressed her up to look like a bride for a destination wedding. We love the hair and make-up but where’s the jewellery? The colours are fresh but can this pass off as bridal wear off the ramp?! Do you like Geeta Basra’s look?

Then there was Riya Sen who walked the ramp for designer Arpan Vohra. The designer aimed at creating a riviera feel but the dress of his showstopper looks like it has been created out of leftover fabrics! Fashionable sister-duo Sonam and Rhea Kapoor were front row guests at Anamika Khanna’s show at Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2011. Both the sisters flaunted the androgynous look with Indian jewellery.

Sonam’s outfit was completely inspired by menswear, lean jacket, waist coat and trousers. Rhea went a little soft by wearing a ruffled skirt and a MapxencaRS jacket with a massive rosette. Do you like Sonam’s edgy look more than Rhea’s feminine style?

Anamika Khanna designed the pristine white jacket worn by Sonam. It was definitely a part of her summer resort collection and similar jackets were spotted on the ramp too. Just like the Kapoor sisters’ outfits, the collection was all about androgyny with waistcoats, trousers, stiff-collared shirts and men’s jodhpurs.

With just a few days left to go before the Fashion Week, there are unmistakable signs that the fashion event is steadily losing favour with senior established designers.

Narendra Kumar Ahmed, who has been the unofficial mascot of the fashion event has opted out this year as have veterans Neeta Lulla, Wendell Rodricks and Vikram Phadnis.

On the list are other key names who were part of Fashion Week 2010 line-up but are missing this year are Krishna Mehta, Lecoanet Hemant, Nikasha Tawadey, Nachiket Barve, Payal Singhal and Riyaz Gangji. Nachiket Barve who showed at the event for eight consecutive seasons has decided to put up a stall instead at Delhi Fashion Week this year. So has Payal Singhal.

Most others say they are either too busy (Phadnis says he is opening a store in Delhi) or trying out other business models. But the bottom-line is most senior designers seem to have outgrown the Fashion Week, which is increasingly being viewed as a launch pad for new and emerging designers looking to find a toe-hold in the industry.

Ahmed, who has often sung paeans to the city in his exquisitely mounted shows, maintains, “This Fashion Week is a wonderful place for young and emerging designers to get noticed.” The designer says he would have loved to be a part pf the show, but is keen to experiment with venues and spaces.

“It’s happening in Europe already. This year I’m planning my individual show at an art gallery or old club at the month end. I will continue to showcase my menswear line in Delhi,” he said.

The city’s showcase fashion event has been mired in controversy ever since it broke away from the parent event, choosing Mumbai over Delhi. While several top designers stuck to the brand which has nurtured the event, others have been moved out citing reasons as diverse as unprofessionalism, lack of buyers, growing might of the Delhi designers (Pria Kataria Puri for instance is the most vocal about being Mumbai being ‘overshadowed’ by the Delhi clique) and undue importance given to young designers with clout in the entertainment industry.

Pria alleged the title sponsor being a cosmetic major was more interested in generating hype than doing serious business. “Which is why perhaps Bollywood stars are important to them. All fashion week organisers need to make up their minds – is the show PR driven, creatively driven or business driven?” she questioned, pointing out that this ambiguity keeps key buyers away from India. “There has to be better coordination between organisers and designers. Just getting media coverage isn’t enough. What ultimately brings back designers is the amount of business generated,” said designer Nikasha Tawadey. Even Neeta Lulla, who will be missing from the event, said that the “general perception” filtering down is that the Mumbai Fashion Week is mere “media hype” while FDCI-run Delhi Fashion Week more about getting buyers.

Several designers have also taken exception to the way emerging talent like Neena Gupta’s daughter Masaba and Jagdish Tytler’s son Siddhartha were to ‘established’ designers to rub shoulders with Satya Paul, Pria Kataria Puri and Sabyasachi.

Moreover, awarding the coveted final slot to Delhi designers Gauri and Nainika too had left the fashion frat unhappy.

Responding to the concerns, Anil Chopra, the man behind Fashion Week, said, “The selection of the finale designer has always been based on the theme and concept of the product collection being launched that season. This year the theme is fantasy and we selected the designer most appropriate to interpret that theme. As far as Masaba is concerned, yes she has been included in the established designer category, but she has a three designer slot at 3 pm unlike prime time slots for senior established designers who are doing solo shows.”

Italian luxury sports car Ferrari will make its official debut in India soon with popular models such as California, 458 Italia, 599GTB Fiorano and the latest FF, with prices starting from Rs 2.2 crores (Rs 22 million) onward. The company has appointed the Shreyans Group as its official importer in India. The Ferrari range which will be sold in India includes the California, priced at Rs 2.2 crore, the 458 Italia at Rs 2.56 crore (Rs 25.6 million) and the 599GTB Fiorano, tagged at Rs 3.37 crore (Rs 33.7 million). Ferrari's latest model

Ferrari’s latest model the FF, which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, will also be available. Its global price has not been announced yet. All the four models will be open to order once the Ferrari dealerships are opened in India. The first Ferrari dealership will be opened in the capital soon and a second one is slated to open in Mumbai in the second half of 2011. He’s just signed on as the head designer at Paco Rabanne and pulled out all the stops for his show at Paris Fashion Week on March 2. Take a look!We often say that a top couturier’s fashion showing was ‘magic’ — but Manish Arora took things a step further with his collection at Paris Fashion Week. He had an actual magician on the runway!Russian illusionist Benjamin Dukhan conjured up the Indian designer’s muses, much to the amusement of the audience and also had them magically disappear after their turn on the catwalk. But despite the theatrics, there was no denying that it was Arora’s talent that took centrestage.The latest offerings from Paco Rabanne’s creative director feature his signature bright colours and bold structure. But this time around, his inspiration was Art Deco from the 20s and the modern deco artwork of Japanese artist Hiroshi Nagai. Silhouettes were designed along the lines of buildings of the ’20s and Nagai’s cityscapes and sunsets played a part in the prints, as did Arora’s favoured traditional Indian prints and baroque-inspired patterns.Seen here is a model in a mini with cape detail, slashed down the front for effect. Those in attendance were not only applauding the outfit, but the manner in which it was presented — Dukhan wheeled out the empty tank, passed his cape over it and voila! Here she is!

Next we have this multi-hued pair of leggings and matching blouse that cling on, accentuated by powder-blue faux fur sleeves and a gold armour-like accoutrement across the bodice.

While the designer caters to Western taste, the Indian influence is subtle but unmistakable. On this coat dress, for instance, it is the rich embroidery that is reminiscent of his ethnic roots.

This shimmery ensemble, with its sharp cuts and box hip shows off a variety of panels in black, grey and silver. The tasselled boots and leather gloves are in stark contrast.
