The 33rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors 2010 is set to air tonight, from 9-11 PM (ET), on CBS. The event celebrates people for their lifetime work in the realms of dance, music, theatre, opera, and television. This year, the five honorees were Merle Haggard, Bill T. Jones, Jerry Herman, Paul McCartney, and Oprah Winfrey. This will mark Caroline Kennedy’s 8th consecutive year hosting the event. The event took place in Washington DC on December 5, 2010.

There were a bunch of noteworthy performers and presenters, including Alec Baldwin, Kelsey Grammer, Dave Grohl, Jennifer Hudson, Willie Nelson, No Doubt, Kid Rock, Julia Roberts, Barbara Walters, Steven Tyler…and that’s just a few! Needless to say, it was a huge and star-studded event.

Caroline Kennedy quoted JFK (her father) at the beginning of the ceremony, and proceeded to describe each of the honorees in glowing terms. Many of the presenters had close relationships with the honorees, like John Travolta, who jokingly remarked, “I have been so used by Oprah! Oh boy, have I been used.”

The 33rd Annual Kennedy Center Honors was first created in 1978 by George Stevens Jr. and Nick Vanoff. The show received an Emmy Award this year (and last!) for Outstanding Variety, Musical or Comedy Special. It has also received other honors, and it is quite an honor to be honored by the program.

Paul the octopus, who won unlikely worldwide fame correctly predicting a host of World Cup matches, has died, his owners said today.

Stefan Porwoll, manager of the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre in Germany, said: ‘His success made him almost a bigger story than the World Cup itself.’

Paul predicted the winners of all Germany’s World Cup clashes, and then of the final by selecting one of two boxes, each loaded with a mussel food treat and marked on the outside with one of the teams.

Staff at the centre said his death was not entirely unexpected, since common octopuses generally only live a couple of years.

‘He appears to have passed away peacefully during the night, of natural causes, and we are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life here,’ said Mr Porwoll.

‘We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine.’

Paul will live on meanwhile in the form of a range of commercial enterprises ranging from special clothing lines to mobile phone applications.

He will also feature in a documentary to be released early next year.

A German zoo has turned down a “transfer request” from Spain for its star performer during the football World Cup – Paul the “psychic” octopus.

The cephalopod correctly predicted the outcome of all of Germany’s seven matches in the tournament, and also plumped for Spain to lift the trophy.

This made him an instant hero in Spain, and now Madrid’s Zoo says it wants to put Paul on display in its aquarium.

But Oberhausen’s Sea Life centre said there was no chance of Paul being sold.

“We’re very glad that Paul will stay here,” Sea Life spokeswoman Tunja Munzig said, adding that any other possible bids from abroad would be rejected.

Earlier, Madrid Zoo official Javier Diaz said the management was in talks with Oberhausen to see if the Germans wanted to exchange the 2.5-year-old octopus for “one of the species we have here”.

“What they might need is coral or small sharks. But if they don’t want any of that we might offer some money,” Mr Diaz said.

Honorary citizen

Ever since Paul predicted Spain’s triumph in the month-long tournament in South Africa, he has become a celebrity in Spain.

Fans watching last Sunday’s final in Madrid sported mini-Pauls on their T-shirts and squidgy replicas on top of their hats.

The octopus is already an honorary citizen of one Spanish town, and a summer festival in Paul’s name is being planned in the country.

Even Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero stepped in to offer protection, after bitter German fans threatened to eat Paul for predicting Germany’s defeat in the semi-final against Spain.

One Spanish fan said that Paul should replace the bull, which is often seen on Spanish flags.

“The octopus has done more [good] things that the bull,” the fan said.

But sadly for many Spaniards, Paul is staying home in Oberhausen.

It was easily Spain’s best performance of the competition so far. They are peaking at the right time. But the Dutch are undefeated, at 6-0-0, and are convinced that this is their time as well.

Finally, after decades of waiting, one of these teams will win their first World Cup. Spain and Puyol certainly served notice in Durban that they would be a worthy champion, and that history can be changed by players who have the will to unite and move past it.

The Netherlands and Spain will have a chance to write a dream ending to their campaigns on Sunday July 11th, 2010 when they vie for the biggest prize in football in Johannesburg, South Africa.
