Azarenka has had an eventful 2010 season, in every way. After making the semifinals in Sydney, folllowed by Aussie Open quarterfinals, where she led eventual champion Serena Williams by a set and 4-0 before succumbing to defeat, Azarenka managed a final berth in Dubai. More success followed when the Belarusian star reached semifinals in Eastbourne and Montreal before clinching title glory in Stanford with a comprehensive win over Maria Sharapova. Azarenka then had a mild concussion during her second round match at the US Open post which she was forced to take time off court. However, with a semifinal finish in the premier event in Tokyo, Azarenka regained top form.

Azarenka’s opponent today is the German, Andrea Petkovic, who has given some consistent performances during 2010. After opening the year with a semifinal finish in Brisbane, Petkovic made one more last four appearance in Istanbul after which she reached the final in s-Hertogenbosch, losing to a resurgent Justine Henin in the title match. Petkovic squandered several opportunities to close out the match against Patty Schnyder in Linz and once again finished as semifinalist but in doing so, gave a clear indication of her top form.

This is a first meeting between both players and is likely to end in Azarenka’s favour, by the virtue of the Belarusian’s strong run in a series of touraments this year.

TennisEarth.com’s Pick – Azarenka in straight sets.

Heard the one about the Belarussian who upped sticks to America to live with her sponsor (an NHL ice hockey goalie) and his family? You have now, because with three Sony Ericsson WTA Tour titles in her first three years as a pro, Victoria Azarenka is shaking up the game. And she’s doing it with blonde hair, blue eyes and a body from heaven. Not that you lot have cottoned on. Until now…

She has been criticised by ex-professionals, including Chris Evert, for the level of noise she makes when hitting the ball.

Azarenka is known around the circuit for losing her temper easily during games.

She was the first player from Belarus to be named the ITF Junior Girls World Champion.
