Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s sister-in-law is converting to Islam following a spiritual awakening in Iran.
Lauren Booth, 43, the half sister of Blair’s wife, Cherie, announced her decision at a weekend Global Peace and Unity rally in London.
“What I wanted to share with you today is that I am Lauren Booth and I am a Muslim,” she said to a cheering crowd.
Booth’s move to Islam comes three years after Blair converted to Catholicism. She said she began her conversion to Islam six weeks ago after visiting a shrine in the Iranian holy city of Qom.
“I sat down and felt this shot of spiritual morphine, just absolute bliss and joy,” said Booth, a journalist, human rights activist and former reality-TV contestant.
She said she has stopped eating pork and started reading the Koran daily, going to a mosque and covering her head with a hijab, a traditional Muslim scarf.
“I also haven’t had a drink in 45 days, the longest period in 25 years,” Booth said.
